The Food Fighters were an action figure collection released by Mattel in 1988 and '89. Archetypal for the concept of a food fight, the figures were all different kinds of anthropomorphous food dressed in up military gear. Food Fighters consisted of ten figures and three accessory toys, and a refrigerator Playground which was designed but never produced. The people were divided into two armies: the protagonist and the antagonist Kitchen Commandos and Refrigerator Rejects, respectively. Each toy sculpture is made of a soft, hollow plastic sqeaky like toy and a small hand gun and removable backpack. The slogan on the figures' packaging read, "Combat At Its Kookiest!"
Food Fighters were often sold in small discount store chains. The collection was also not supported by an animated cartoon TV series or graphic novel, and is therefore not one of the most fondly remembered action figure lines from the era. However, the Food Fighters still garner significant interest from vintage toy collectors.
